Rejoice! Spring suddenly seems vibrantly fresh and benevolent, and Victoria has finally joined its interstate siblings by making a break for freedom. It’s been a long, cold, lonely lockdown. Here comes the sun…
Fittingly, fresh juice is flowing from all corners of the globe with which to toast more hopeful times. From Germany, we have a brand-new wine from Georg Breuer called ‘Riesling Venture’, as well as the new arrivals from Heymann-Löwenstein and Koehler-Ruprecht. Across the border in Austria, it’s clear that 2019 was a really exciting harvest for Grüner Veltiner, and we feature four affordable beauties from Domäne Wachau, Bründlmayer, Groiss and Emmerich Knoll. And, staying in Austria, we’re delighted to share the news that Fritz Miesbauer of Stadt Krems and Stift Göttweig has been named Winemaker of the Year by the highly respected Falstaff Magazine.
Closer to home, Al Timms of Shadowfax has put out three exceptional single-site wines from high-altitude vineyards in the Macedon Ranges – two Pinots and a Chardonnay. Punt Road has been flowing nicely, with three wines from the weird and wonderful 2020 harvest now available. Over in Clare, the Barry brothers of clos Clare have been busy winning golds galore at the Clare Valley and Adelaide Hills wine shows. And, tying things back to Europe, their Loosen Barry Wolta Wolta Riesling collaboration with Erni Loosen scored them a 98-point review from James Halliday. Sold in a smart three-bottle wooden case, it’d make a great Christmas gift!
And speaking of Christmas, we’ve once again featured the beautiful glassware range of Jancis Robinson. Being a universal glass, it’s the only one a winelover needs – and the accompanying decanters are also in a league of their own.
