Once coined a “wizard” with the grape the late Bernhard Huber’s legacy lives on through his son Julian, and the Baden old vines (alte Reben) his father planted now start to come into their own. Julian has tamed the oak (now just 18 months in barriques) so this retains a lovely savoury smoky base, with top notes of cherry and chocolate, followed by a streak of salty minerality to finish.

Notes
The step above the village (Malterdinger) wine is the Huber Alte Reben Pinot Noir. In quality terms, this is Huber’s equivalent of a Premier Cru. This Pinot comes from vines of up to 40 years old. Huber harvests the Alte Reben at 37 hl/ha. The ferment contains 35 to 40% whole bunches, with some parcels from the Bienenberg vineyard also going into this. This wine is bottled unfiltered. It has complex, deep aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and spice but also soft tannins, a frisky-elegant character with a fine echo.
