Apricot kernel, apple pie, mint, ginger and clove spice. It’s smooth and creamy, apple pie, sweet lime and tangerine, a savoury salty cinnamon pie crust kind of thing, firm chalky texture, waxy too, with lots of flavour and presence, almost into Chardonnay weight here, with a saline ‘mineral’ and umami inflection, and a firm crunch and apricot aftertaste. Not your average Riesling, that’s for sure.

Notes
The name for Frankland Estate Alter Weg Riesling comes from the German for “old way” and this describes our approach to this Riesling. We have been fine-tuning this style now for eight vintages and we think every year we get it a little better. This wine’s success has also given us confidence in the direction we have been heading in for the last decade with all our Rieslings from SmithCullam, Isolation Ridge Vineyard and even the Estate Riesling now having a little more palate weight, texture and a pursuit of flavour diversity.
Organic, ripe balanced Riesling fruit is harvested and gently pressed to large-format barrel where it undergoes wild yeast fermentation. A further 10 months of aging on full lees in barrel (1000L and 500L) follows, resulting in a superbly textured Riesling with approachability and generosity of fruit supported by the creamy textural element of this vibrant Riesling. – Hunter Smith, Frankland Estate
