Quite light and fresh for Serralunga, lots of mint, strawberry and cherry, with a floral top note. It’s medium to full-bodied, a sweet uptake of raspberry and strawberry, laced with mint and spice, supple tannin, a light powdery grip to tannin, a whole lot of charm, though the theme is of juicy, almost sweet red fruit, with a light and dusty tea-laced finish of good length. This Luigi Baudana Barolo blends together Nebbiolo from three beautiful vineyards of Serralunga d’Alba: Baudana, Cerretta and a small parcel of Costabella. It is a classic wine in the making, with a clear signature of this terroirs and its ancient soils.
Baudana and Costabella lay on the west slope of Serralunga, at a confluence of the Tortonian and Serravallian plateaux. Cerretta runs on the opposite slope, with a south-east exposure, over the ancient Formazioni di Lequio market by a deep vein of red clay.
In 2020, fruit was picked on October 9th. As normal here, it was sorted twice, first in the vineyard and then on the sorting table. Vinification was carried in vertical tini, with gentle punch-down and rinsing of the cap. Maceration lasted 50 days on average. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation occurred in the following Spring. The wine was aged 24 months mainly in Slavonian casks of 15, 17, 25 hectoliters and a few neutral barrels, prior to bottling on July 13th, 2023.
The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is a sleek and savoury wine. Dark red fruits, blood orange nuances, loads of liquorice and leather. The mouthfeel is ample and balanced, with ferrous tones, raspberry liqueur, light tobacco and white pepper. Open-knit and juicy, it’s a beautiful gateway into the terroir of Serralunga d’Alba.
This is a sleek and savory Barolo that shows notes of blood orange, wild raspberries, white tea and peaches, with a touch of brined olive. It’s medium- to full-bodied, fine-tannined and elegant. Best after 2026. 93 points. JamesSuckling.com Feb 2024

The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba is an attractive mid-weight wine that shows the aromatic complexity typical of Serralunga.
