The 2022 Chablis Butteaux Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from vines around 70 years old, only slightly older than the regular cuvée, but on different soils (white clay rather than brown with high fossil content). It is usually bottled slightly later. The nose is a little more expressive with hints of red cherries and peach skin – very well defined. The palate is well- balanced with more harmony than the regular cuvée, a crisp line of acidity and touches of oyster shell on the saline finish. Great persistence here. Excellent. 92-94 points. Notes

Kimmeridgian. Left bank. South-Southeast exposure. This parcel is located at the top of the slope. The topsoil is moderately deep, made up of clay and silt with lots of limestone. Fairly steep slope. Very good air circulation. Year planted: 1955

With an exceptional location right in the centre of Butteaux, the fruit from these old vines fully deserves to be vinified separately and its wine matured as a Grand Cru. Ageing: 8 to 15 years

No added yeasts, long fermentation using indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled tanks. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation. Matured for 20 to 24 months only in stainless steel tanks with as little intervention as possible. Moderate cold stabilisation. Fined with bentonite if necessary. Lightly filtered once just before bottling.

Serve at between 12 and 14°C. Swirl the glass before tasting to allow the wine to breathe. It opens with notes of concentrated milk, acacia blossom and liquorice. On the palate, saline, maritime notes yield to a warm finish with jam, peach and cooked apples, tarte Tatin. – Guillaume Gicqueau-Michel, Louis Michel

This is similar to the regular cuvée except that it seems ever-so-slightly riper. By contrast, there is better concentration and power to the medium-bodied flavors and, somewhat unusually, the mouthfeel is finer as well, particularly on the more complex if also more austere finale. Guillaume Michel calls this parcel “extremely Kimmeridgian”, and its resulting wine has a pleasantly gritty, chalky dryness. Flavors of fennel, green gages, seashore and cheese rind add intensity and complexity on the palate. The acidity grips the dense palate and drags the flavors into a solid finish. 94 points. Less impact than Sechets but more perfumed and floral. Ooh! That’s got so much volume that I question how it can also be so incisive. Pure but concentrated – the fluidity of this meaning you hardly note the generosity of the wine. Slowly fading – actually quite a discreet finish vs the rest of the wine – but no less persistent than the wines around it I think. That will be a great one too. Bill Nanson, Burgundy Report
