2022 Stefano Lubiana Il Giardino Single-Block Pinot Noir

The soil type in the Il Giardino block consists of cracking black clay base over patches of chalky limestone. Limestone that is underneath is known to attract water and clay allows for valuable water retention. Our Il Giardino vineyard is planted at a varied elevation, ranging from 60 – 80 metres. The vines are 15 years old with a mixture of clones including Abel, 8047, 2051, Pommard, D4V2 and MV6. We maintain low yields less than 4 tonnes per hectare. The block is located high on the hillside tucked away from the at times harsh westerly weather.

Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately. The fruit undergoes wild fermentaton in open top fermenters with all fruit in the 2022 vintage of this wine being whole bunch. After fermentation the ferments are pressed first and then gravity fed to a mixture of second and third fill 225L French oak barriques in our underground cellar. The wine matures in these conditions until it is transferred to tank a month prior to bottling. Bottled in June 2023 our premium Single Block Pinot Noirs are matured in the bottle for over a year on cork prior to release in July 2024.

The 2022 Il Giardino Pinot Noir is a vibrant pyrope garnet hue. This wine is built to age, shy on the nose lavendar, rose petal, chacturie meats and wild brambly berries. The palate has pronounced pomegranate, cranberry and red cherry notes which sculpt a lively bright acidity in the wine. The tannin structure is layered whichcreates a long finish. We recommend decanting to enjoying with a rich red meat dish or white sauce pasta, although will benefit further from aging for 5 to 10 years. – Monique & Stefano Lubiana
