Ripe cherry and red fruits, biscuit spice, a dried rose perfume. It’s medium-bodied, quite succulent in red fruit flavour, a little amaro tang, a mesh of fine powdery tannin, with a slightly nutty finish of excellent length. Lovely wine. The Orchard Vineyard has one acre of Pinot Noir, MV6 and 115 clone. It is a small 30-year-old vineyard overlooking western port bay. It is non-irrigated and an extensive orchard with giant hedges to protect it from prevailing winds and forming a sun trap. It’s not a common sub-region of the Mornington Peninsula. There is incredible retention in this vineyard.
100% destemmed. A combination of pumping over and plunging. 3 weeks in the fermenter and pressed straight to oak for barrel fermentation. No new oak. All bottled in July 2024.
The 2023 Pinot Noir was picked with incredible natural acidity, destemmed into a small fermenter, only pumped over three times, the idea was to retain as much freshness with this wine. Dominated by the 115 clone, it always shows earth and becomes very autumnal.
The wine shows notes of vibrant red fruits and a slight bit of cherry. It dances with all the red and blue berries on the palate, always delicate but buoyant. It is very pure and clean. – Will Byron, Onannon
