Julian Langworthy quips that it’s more mid-weight than light but MDR didn’t have quite the same ring to it. Still, this dry red extends well beyond its modest moniker. It’s brightly attractive and alluring to sniff: violets, blueberries, raspberry coulis, red cherries, while the mineral and savoury nuances slip in with cracked pepper, black olive and crushed chalk. Light Dry Red … should likely have been called MDR or Medium Dry Red but apparently it didn’t sound as cool. That said, it’s pretty light and the early release shows just how well the freshness and joy of this site can be expressed. Fresh and modern, the palate is powder-fine with the most elegant tannin structure. Succulent red cherries and raspberry flavours are tied together, with an almost ethereal minerality and fresh acidity coursing through the wine.
