Coal River Valley chardonnay. Light straw in the glass with inviting aromas of white peach, nectarine and citrus with hints of soft spice, white flowers, oatmeal, crushed stone, nougat, clotted cream and a wisp of struck flint. A picture of clarity and tension with a swoop of pithy texture, a mealy tide slowly retreating and some lovely grapefruit pith notes as the wine retreats. 95 points. Notes
100% fruit from the Coal River this year, fermented in an old Foudre and a mix of new and 1 year old 500l puncheons. This year we pressed the grapes without tredding, because we thought due to the warmer season that fresh was best. As usual the wine does not go through Malo to retain its acidity.
It’s an aromatic wine this year, there is peach and citrus on the nose. The white peach follows on the pallet with parmesan rind and fenugreek. Its rich and mouthfiling with its fruit flavours, but there is some underlying structure and hits of tannin from the new oak. Finishing with fresh acidity and great balance, should be a great drink for summer. – Joe & Lou Holyman
