Liam McElhinney is rightly recognised as one of the standout talents of the contemporary Australian wine scene. It’s easy to see why. With dry wit and endearing modesty, this born leader catapulted Lowestoft to the top of our highly competitive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir premier league. He snagged the first of three back-to-back Best Pinot Noir trophies at Melbourne Royal Wine Show with his first vintage. The hat-trick harvest won the Jimmy Watson.
Show success is one thing. It makes headlines and stirs trophy hunters, but deeper affection from the trade and general public is a slower burn. Consistent excellence, inevitably backed by scores, reinforces a reputation. But to borrow Liam’s expression, it’s what happens when you get liquid on lips that really counts.
Lowestoft’s liquid invariably induces from those lips a smile of supreme satisfaction. The threads of flowers, fruit and spices are beautifully interwoven; phenolics are sleek, tannins are silky, and an irresistible rhythm thrums from Tassie’s trademark acidity.
For all Liam’s individual brilliance, Lowestoft is a team effort, and perhaps his greatest achievement is to have this team firing the way it is. The focus in the vineyard and cellar is razor-sharp, the bonds are tight, and the wins are wholeheartedly celebrated.
The combination makes Lowestoft a breeding ground for better wines—the kind you know you’ll love, but whose wonders never cease.
