The wine is processed like a mixed batch, a colorful mixture of all kinds of grapes from old vineyards that Hannes Schuster collects. Often the smallest plots, all in organic farming. This is Hannes’ idea of a Pannonian white wine, without any make-up of wood or other gimmicks. Rebelting, pressing, spontaneous fermentation, wood aging, a small part in stainless steel. Fresh, straightforward fruit on the nose, green pear, Granny Smith, lime blossom, acacia, chalk dust. Very straight, crystalline mouth, fine salty minerality that lingers on the tongue for a long time with a slightly white pepper undertone. A great start! 93 points. Notes
This is Hanne Schuster’s entry-level white cuveé, which is made with such effort and consideration that it would qualify it as a full-blown top cuvée. The vineyard selection from Schützen am Gebirge, Oslip and Sankt Margarethen consists of 60% Grüner Veltliner from vines up to 53 years old and 40% mixed set (Welschriesling, Furmint, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay). The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented spontaneously and then aged for 9 months: 65% in steel tanks and 35% in large used wooden barrels. The thoroughly harmonious and sophisticated wine is full-bodied and juicy, with delicately smoky aromas, powerful and yet not carried by fruit, but by spice and minerality.
Still quite yeasty in the smoky nose, but on the medium-bodied palate this is already open and expressive, with aromas of apple puree and preserved lemon. Although this is a lively dry white, there are plenty of fine tannins that deftly support this long, supple finish. A unique dry white that’s mostly a field blend based on gruner veltliner.
