2023 Chalmers Pecorino

The Chalmers Pecorino, now in its fourth year of existence, it’s now finding its groove especial after the award winning 2021 vintage as a confident, and ‘much surer of itself’ wine.  Originating from The Marche region in Central Italy, this variety typically is generous and savoury in style, while maintaining the generosity and savoury qualities still, we’re seeing a little more restraint and finesse coming off our Heathcote vineyard.

Hand-picked on 7 March 2023 on red Cambrian soil. Wild ferment, no added acid, 10 months on lees. Complex and zesty with red peach, fenugreek, smoked almonds, dried pear and fresh bay leaf. – Chalmers

Citrus driven, not entirely lifted and light, there’s weight to it and texture, brown lime, bitter lemon, nutty element, salty flow. A bit of yellow stone fruit and quince and a mead type of character but the flavours seem a touch clipped with alcohol, regardless, it’s a pleasantly textural wine. 91 points. Slate, pear, blackcurrant bud and apple flavours talk a pretty good game here. It’s as juicy as it is dry, and as free-flowing as it is honed. Sinewy isn’t a word we often use for white wines, but it applies here. 91 points. Campbell Mattinson, Wine Companion March 2024
