Fruit from the Dead Morris and Old Paulownia blocks. Cabernet co-fermented with 4.8% petit verdot. Matured for 18 months in French oak (52% new). The indefatigable fruit here is a solid match for the oak – at no point does it wither beneath the weight of it. This is a classically styled, almost old-school cabernet, but it has been handled with class. That fruit, as mentioned, is glorious. A beautiful wine which will no doubt age gracefully. 95 points. Notes
The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975 and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra Rossa strip. The family, which has been associated with the district since 1855, remains fully committed to a high level of ‘hands-on’ involvement.
Vintage 2019, after good winter rains and a warm spell at Christmas, turned very cool and late ripening with final grapes in on the 1st of May. This year’s Blend is Cabernet Sauvignon (49%), Merlot (38%), Cabernet Franc (7.5%) and Petit Verdot (5.5%). Matured in 21% new oak for 14 months prior to bottling in September 2020.
Deep red in colour with a rich nose of liquorice, black fruits, cranberries and some vanilla from the wood, dense and fleshy. Fuller bodied with deep fruit, round soft tannins and lingering dark liquorice fruit characters, 2019 is an outstanding vintage and this is one of the best blends we have made. – Balnaves
