Silvaner (also spelled Sylvaner, in Alsace) is one of Germany’s few white wine grapes that produce mostly dry rather than fruitier styles of wine. Once the most popular variety in Germany, today it lies in fifth place behind Riesling, Müller Thurgau, and the red varieties Spätburgunder and Dornfelder. With Savagnin and Traminer as parents, Sylvaner tends to produce wines less about aromatic qualities and more about mineral raciness and firmness of structure with full body. The region with the greatest area of Silvaner planted is Rheinhessen, where enjoying a glass with the new season’s asparagus is almost a local religion.

The 2020 Nackenheim Silvaner XT, from Nackenheimer Rothenberg and Nackenheimer Engelsberg, is grown in red clay slate with a regional sandy & loamy structure. The wine has elegant minerality with herbal aromas of hay and grass with subtle fruit flavours of apples and gooseberries, fine acidity and a pleasing structure.
