2022 clos Clare à côte clos Grenache

Brothers, Tom and Sam Barry, have been creating wines from the boutique winery, clos Clare, since 2008. Never straying far from their original vision, this Grenache is a contemporary take on the classic variety.

In 2019, the family had the opportunity to purchase a vineyard in Watervale which included old vine Grenache planted in 1938 and 1954. This gave us the opportunity
to change the fruit resource and redefine the style of our grenache. The 2022 was hand picked in March, destemmed and fermented in small 500kg open fermenters before resting in 4-5 year-old French oak Hogs Heads for 9 months prior to bottling.

Bright red fruits, ripe strawberries, and berry compote with a lick of orange oil/skin on the nose.

Silky on entry, with a rich fruited mid-palate of wild strawberries, rich cherry, hints of forest floor and warm spicy notes. Persistent and fine tannin throughout, finishing firmly with cranberry like acidity. From vines planted in 1938 & 1954. – Clos Clare

Strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate, brown spices and mint. It’s bright and frisky, a pleasing pumice stone texture, a cranberry crunch gives freshness, and the finish offers good length. Lots of energy and good to drink. 91 points. Gary Walsh, The Wine Front Nov 2023
