2022 Dr Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Grosses Gewächs

This wine is harvested from our oldest parcels of Erdener Treppchen, where steady winds keep the clusters dry and prevent the onset of harmful molds. This allows for an exceptionally long hang time, giving the grapes extraordinary aromatic development. It is grown on red slate soils. The wine is fermented spontaneously in a 1,000-liter barrel and sits on the full lees for twelve months. The dry wine from a VDP.GROSSE LAGE vineyard is the VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS (GG). The best wines, with complex taste, expressive site character and special ripening potential mature in the Grosse Lagen. The grapes are harvested and selected by hand. Only healthy grapes from the best plots are fermented spontaneously in neutral oak barrels (1,000 to 3,000 liters) and matured for at least 12 months on the full lees. – Dr Loosen

Quite often the unsung hero of the trio of Grosses Gewächs that we religiously bring down under from Erni every year, this rendition of the wildly steep Treppchen vineyard is up there as the wine of the vintage from Erni and the rest of the crew. Sonnenuhr as always is super charming and delicious, Würzgarten the more obvious and impressive of the trio. However, Treppchen, as always, plays its cards closer to its chest. You have to work a little harder to dial in on its inner charm. Racy and pure, aromatic and lacy, the tension & focus in the mouth is something to behold…. Michael Jappy, CellarHand
