Bottled in September this year, the 2022 Kallstadter Riesling Kabinett trocken is quite intense and yeasty on the nose. Rich and refined on the palate, this is a medium to full-bodied, intense but elegant and refined, saline and stimulating Riesling with deep aromas and a long and saline finish. Notes
The grapes are harvested with up to five selective pickings by hand. They’re crushed and then macerated between 12 to 24 hours before undergoing spontaneous fermaentation. The wines are aged in tradtional oval-shaped oak or chesnut barrels ranging from 300 to 2400 litres, with up to nine months on lees.
Barrel fermented, of course & a so-called “light weight” and classic Kabinett with intensity coming on the palate. A really fun wine with some fresh white fruit flavours as well as some herbal characters of sage, rosemary and thyme.
This dry riesling Kabinett deftly squares the circle of light body (just 10.5% alcohol) and ripe aromas – think fresh pineapple and star fruit. Key to that is the lively, yet silky acidity that’s underlined by a delicate touch of fine tannin at the long, citrusy finish. Drink now. 91 points. Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com Dec 2023
