The power of the palate. You don’t see this kind of presence in riesling all that often. The palate has a weight to it. Grapefruit and lime, stone and mineral, creamed honey and florals. Reduction adds to this impression. So too chalk, dry chalk, and lots of it. I couldn’t quite see the length for higher points but even so, this is mightily impressive.

Notes
Gunderloch Nackenheim Riesling bears the VDP designation ‘Aus Ersten Lagen’ because its fruit is derived solely from the great Rothenberg grand cru in the Hasselbach’s home village of Nackenheim. This steeply sloped vineyard features crumbly red slate (sandstone and clay rich in iron deposits) and produces taut, powerful, minerally Rieslings with citrus and stone fruit characters and a dusting of sweet spice.
