2023 Stefano Lubiana Primavera Chardonnay

Two of our vineyards contribute the fruit to our 2023 Primavera Chardonnay. Most of the fruit is yielded from our Granton vineyard located in the Derwent Valley. The other small portion of fruit is sourced from our Cradoc vineyard, in the heart of the Huon Valley. The Granton soil has a gravel base covered in red loam with patches of riverbed silt and the Cradoc soil is composite cobble stone over white clay. The mix of two terroirs gives this wine a beautiful balance of acidity and flavour. Our Granton fruit offers a rich, mealy and creaminess palate which creates deep texture. Whereas our Cradoc fruit brings a brightness and sherbity acid line with a beautiful element of grapefruit.

Hand-picked grapes are processed immediately all fruit is pressed first then barrelled by gravity to the underground cellar. The juice, on full solids, fills the barriques and 500L foudres (100% oak). The foudres are balanced with a level of new oak barriques. The juice’s indigenous yeast now takes the stage and erupts into spontaneous fermentation, bubbling away in our naturally cool and calm underground cellar below our Cellar Door. Once the wine is dry secondary fermentation begins with inoculation. Barrels are topped regularly and battonaged infrequently. Steve’s knowledge and experience with Chardonnay over three decades are now being imparted onto our next generation winemaker, Marco Lubiana. Marco has been working full time with alongside Steve at Stefano Lubiana Wines for 6 years now and this is his second year running the winery. – Steve & Monique Lubiana
